Flyin' Solo
It feels like just yesterday, when the storm of the century hit Seattle Grace and made Alex Karev freeze up in an elevator. Remember that, everybody?
The hospital had lost its power. Alex and George were stuck in an elevator with a dying heart patient. Dr. Burke was yelling some crazy MacGyver heart surgery instructions down the elevator shaft. Alex picked up a scalpel and HE CHOKED… Ah, memories.
Cut to TODAY when Alex Karev won the first resident solo surgery and totally ROCKED IT. That’s right, folks: I said Alex Karev. He flew solo and a true surgeon was born. And a tear falls...
I hear that Yang was the Chief’s first pick, but – since she was disqualified after her interns decided to OPERATE ON THEMSELVES – the Chief made Cristina choose the winner herself. Which is actually really, really funny (to me) but probably really, really horrible to Cristina.
Seriously. It must’ve driven Yang mad all day. You’d think she would’ve picked Meredith. But, rumor has it that the two have been fighting. A lot. Something about Meredith not having Cristina’s back when the Chief heard about that whole crazy-intern-taking-out-her-own-appendix thing.
Hey, friends fight. There’s no getting around it. You fight. You make up. You fight again. You make up again. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. But, when it starts getting personal, well – that’s when things can get ugly. You know, I hope Meredith and Cristina’s little squabble doesn’t get too personal. Although, it kind of seems like it already has… Cristina picking bonafide evil spawn ALEX KAREV over supposed best friend MEREDITH GREY? Yeah. There’s definitely some trouble in paradise…
The formerly inseparable bff’s didn’t even sit next to one another at Alex’s impromptu celebration at the bar tonight. One didn’t even look in the other’s direction. Cristina in one corner. Mer in the other. And, as a result, the night DID NOT feel right. Come on ladies, will you just kiss and make up?
I tried to coax George into playing mediator (I like to stir the pot sometimes, I can’t help it), but all George wanted to talk about was Izzie. He thinks something’s seriously wrong with the girl. I, however, didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. She was there, right beside Alex the whole night, all smiles, reveling in her boyfriend’s success. Okay, so maybe she went to the bathroom quite a bit. But she was drinking quite a bit, too. Who knows?! I hope George is wrong and everything with Iz is alright.
I thought for sure Lexie would’ve stopped by to congratulate Alex, but she didn’t. And I really wanted to get some more details from her about whack job intern Sadie. Like, did she really ask for a mirror so she could see her funny friends poke around her insides looking for her appendix? And – more importantly – is she really a lesbian? Because, let me tell you, she was all up in Callie’s grill tonight. The furtive glances, the longing stares, the flirty smiles? ALL NIGHT LONG? They were making ME uncomfortable. Not really. I kinda dug it. But, just… get a room, ladies.
Anyhoo – Meredith didn’t stay very long tonight. She said she had to get home to Derek. He “had a rough day.” It was cute. Mer is really, actually, truly, totally making a go at this whole committed relationship thing. I’m proud of her. I’ve seen her come a long way from her days of taking home random strangers from the bar. And, that, my friends, is a very good thing.
As Meredith was walking out, I couldn’t help but notice Cristina glancing in her direction, watching her best friend go. I so wanted Yang to get up and follow Mer out the door, as usual. But, she didn’t. Okay, it’s official… Things are definitely personal…
Until next time…
- Joe the Bartender

At least you give us Mer/Der insight cause the show sure doesn't...
Loved you wrote Mer didn't stay long and went home cause Derek had a rough day...yes, we'd like to see that!

Oh Joe it's a good thing Mer and Christina are fighting. Christina is depending way too much on Mer. She barges in on Mer and Der at the crack of dawn. She doesn't support Mer's relationship with Derek. What kind of a best friend is Christina. She just sucks. And believe me on the long term Christina is gonna cause trouble for Meredith and Derek.

thank you:) At least you have something sweet about merder:))

So, Meredith went home to comfort Derek after his rough day? How lovely it would have been if we could have SEE IT on our screens. This isn't rocket science, writers. This is why Mer/Der fans are complaining. Can you please spend more time writing scenes such as this into the actual episode and stop telling us about it in a blog?

I hope Mer and Cris make up, too. I know BFFs fight from time to time, but they are the only stable relationship on this show. And why can't other people understand that GA is an "ensemble"? Mer/Der have had their screen time for the last 4 seasons and it's about time the other characters get some love too. Just sayin...

Love Alex and Izzie! :)

I agree with Astrid.
Merder is HEALTHY, now we need to fix everyone else, haha. I can see why the writers are trying to even out the screentime. Give them a break.
If you have such a problem with it, write your own show. See how that works.

Am I the only one disgust with the whole McSteamy/Lexipedia? I mean come on, that's just too... Argh! The best friend sleeping with the girlfriend's sister! As for Cristina and Meredith fighting I hope they make up, but maybe not right now 'cause Cris really need someone like Hunt right now

Thanks for the MerDer info. You're the only one giving us any insight on them, and I know we MerDer fans appreciate it. So thank you. :)

Who cares that Mer went home to Derek (which she does every night)? Who did Cristina go home with? That's what I want to know...

Thanks for the info Joe. Mer being concered about Derek and Cris and Mer sitting away from each other would have been such a great scene to watch. This is TV. We are suppose to SEE this. 10 million people don't read your blog. They just hit the remote button because of all the "things" we are suppose to know. I am sure last week was a great scene at Casa Grey with Meredith talking to Lexie in the kitchen. Oh wait. We didn't SEE that either. Maybe you can blog about that conversation. I am such a great viewer, I want to know...Oh I mean I am a great READER!

Love the Mer/Cris fighting. It gives Mer more Derek-time and it gives Cristina the opportunity to get to know Hunt a little better! Oh and it's time Alex figure out something is wrong with Izzie. Wake up Evil Spawn, your girlfriend is definitely not okay!

It took about as long to watch MerDer on screen this week as it did to read about them in your blog, Joe.
And that...is bullsh*t. Sorry, but that is just how it is. We have to see and hear endless crap about Dizzie and Crowen and Mexie (gag).
Joe, can you let someone over there where you work know they need to get their MerDer sh*t together and fast before this embarrassment of storylines can't even be saved by Meredith and Derek getting completely naked, getting married and/or building their dream house from the ground up themselves?
Thanks.

Thanks joe for giving us a insight on MerDer. I'm tired of the no screentime for them. I really don't care about Cristina and Mer making up. She treats Mer like crap, she needs to just kick her to the curb.

when will you make it back on screen joe?

thanks for a great blog and your insight.

Aww, I love that George is so worried about Izzie. And of course he's the one noticing.. he's her BFF after all.
Posted by: | December 09, 2008 at 01:49 AM
where has george been?? I really miss him. i feel like he has had a minor part in the past 3 or 4 episodes. and i CANNOT handle this denny being a ghost and following Izzie around and them having sex constantly. HE ISN'T REAL!!!! It took so long for Iz and Alex to get together and now a ghost is going to come in the middle of them. It just makes no sense.

You guys are seriously very strange. Some of you getting mad... and some of you freaking out beacuse "MerDer" isn't getting enough screen time?!? Sorry but I have watched the show since day one... I enjoy every episode. It's a never ending movie, and you end up getting attached to the characters, I get it... But get a real life and stop bitching about storylines. It's a TV show. It's an hour of fantasy... These people aren't real and they can't fulfill what you're looking for... which is obviously why you want to see certain things happen on the show. Fix your own life so you can enjoy the SHOW and everyone on it! And shutttt uppppp.

Lexie wasn't at the bar, Joe? I wonder where she was. Probably at Sloane's...
Posted by: Dana | December 15, 2008 at 02:49 PM
well it would have been NICE to see meredith come home to derek and comfort him...
and NO! i don't want cristina to walk out with mer out of the bar! she has the LOVE OF HER LIFE waiting at home and WE only want to see THEM together and happy.
i mean cristina and mer can be friends, best friends, sisters, whatever...but they do no need to be together 24/7 its so annoying
keep us updated on meredith and derek
